Case Study: Vegetation Clearance on a Residential Development Site
Sensitive Clearance for Sustainable Progress
Location: Leicestershire
Scope: Field and Estate was commissioned to facilitate access, carry out vegetation clearance, and install reptile fencing across a large brownfield site in preparation for a major development.
The site featured a mix of ecological and non-ecological elements, including ponds, wooded areas, and built structures, requiring careful navigation. All works were undertaken in close collaboration with ecologists to ensure environmental sensitivity and compliance throughout.

Scope of Works
Field and Estate implemented a full range of ecological works, including:

-
Vegetation removal – The removal of dense scrub, bramble, tall ruderal vegetation and self-seeded trees to create clear working zones, access routes, and compound areas. All clearance was conducted using a combination of mechanical and hand tools, allowing for precision in ecologically sensitive areas. Arisings were processed and removed to prevent habitat regeneration in cleared zones.

-
Reptile fence installation – The installation of 700m of reptile fencing around environmentally sensitive areas. All arisings and mulched vegetation were ensured to be spread about the site to ensure habitats weren't created during the works.
Navigating challenges
The site presented several challenges due to its proximity to residential dwellings, active public footpaths, and sensitive ecological features such as ponds and woodland. These constraints introduced risks related to noise, limited access, species disturbance, and public interface.
To mitigate these, Field and Estate implemented restricted working hours and used low-impact machinery near property boundaries to minimise disruption. Clearly defined access routes and exclusion zones were established to maintain public safety, while ecological supervision was maintained throughout vegetation clearance and fencing works.
Sensitive areas were approached using hand tools and phased methods, ensuring compliance with ecological protocols and reducing disturbance to local wildlife.

Scope Achievements
Field and Estate successfully delivered access facilitation, vegetation clearance, and reptile fencing across a complex brownfield site. Works were completed on time and in line with ecological best practice, enabling development to progress while protecting sensitive habitats and minimising disruption to nearby residents and public access. The project highlights our ability to operate efficiently in constrained, environmentally sensitive settings.
“Field and Estate delivered the enabling works with professionalism, precision, and a clear understanding of the site’s ecological sensitivities. Their team worked seamlessly alongside ecologists, navigating a complex brownfield environment while ensuring timelines and environmental standards were met. A dependable and knowledgeable contractor from start to finish.”
